Sometimes you don’t need someone to decide for you. You need another way of looking.
ONE QUESTION, THREE ANSWERS
A conversation to start with
“Should I quit my job?”
WORK & LIFE
Three people. Three ways into the question. See what stays with you.
JingThe thoughtful listener
It may help to ask what, exactly, you hope leaving will bring to an end. The work itself? The way you are treated? Or the feeling of becoming someone you no longer recognise? These experiences can resemble one another, but they call for different decisions.
Leaving and staying tell us little until we understand what moves the person who chooses. One person stays out of loyalty; another out of fear. One person leaves with clarity; another carries the same restlessness through a new door.
Three characters. Quite a lot of life between them.
JingThe thoughtful listener
Raised in Vienna, shaped by New York, and repeatedly corrected by life. Jing has spent decades listening to what people say, what they leave out, and what they hope someone will finally ask.
A former philosophy teacher from Hangzhou who has spent as much time caring for family and keeping a bookshop open as discussing how to live. Jang is suspicious of wisdom that only works in a quiet room.
Former complaints clerk, occasional stage magician, and founder of several enterprises that are now valuable learning experiences. Jong has considerable experience of things going wrong, some of it accidental.
Jing, Jang and Jong are fictional characters with distinct lives and ways of seeing. They won’t live your life for you. But they might help you look at it a little differently.
